Genesis
 

Origin of watermelons is in Africa as still we can find plants growing in the wild. Some documents further testify watermelon origin from outskirsts of Kalahari desert. Famous explorer David Livingstone found a lot of fruits of it during his visit in year 1850.

Land of watermelon is China as well as it's one of biggest producers in the world. During thirteenth century Maori tribes brought watermelon to Europe. Slaves from Africa brought it to American continent.

According to USDA information for year 1997 it was grown in 90 countries in the world including our as well.Watermelon is very tasty vegetable culture with dark green or striped rind with red or yellow flesh inside. Wight can vary but it's 10 kg in average. Energy potential is 88 kJ(21 cal) per 100 gr.As it's fruit mainly  consists of water it's very good to use it to solve the thirst. It's very good in solving digestion problems and to reduce water content in oyur bodies.

 

About watermelons

We use fresh fruits for consumption for their nice and fresh taste. Other than used fresh fruits can be processed and used for juice syrups and sweets. From seeds it is possible to extract oil rich in vitamin D. As for the taste and nutrition quality watermelons are comparable to all other fruits. We are of using watermelon for their refreshing effect on us. Their sugar content boosts our energy so we are more positive in any aspect. High water content cleans human organism and does well for our urinary and digestive system. It is obvious that using watermelons in our regular diet is very healthy as it has positive curing effect on coronary, liver, gold bladder and kidney patients. Half kg of fruit can satisfy our daily need in vitamin C. Other than 85% water content it contains 7-15% of sugar, also minerals, vitamins and little bit of proteins as well. Regarding vitamins present are carothens, vitamin B complex and traces of C vitamin. From mineral content present are potasium, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, zinc, iron, and cuprum. It's god source of carothens and lycopens as well. As a conclusion apart from nutrient value it is also important as natural medicine source.

In terms of harvesting we can divide watermelons as early, mid-early and late varieties. Weight of fruit can vary and it is usually in relation with earliness so more early are lighter and late are heavier. Externally color of fruit can vary from white-yellow-gray shade (Charlston Grey); dark green (Sugar Baby) to green with yellow stripes (Crimson) there also pure yellow varieties. Inside there are also different colours of flesh from white to yellow to usual red. In genetic terms there are open pollinated varieties, hybrids and recently popular are seedless types containing triple set of genes. Quantity, size and colour of seed inside the fruit can vary from few rudimentary seeds (seedless) to lot (wild o.p's). Of course consumer prefer less seed so one of the most important breeding efforts are focused to achieve that goal.
